Profile by Jessica Yankura
My work explores the temporal, fluid nature of human physicality and its impact upon the concept of identity. Included in this examination are the notion of truth and the ensuing questions and needs that arise, such as constant evaluation and reinterpretation of self-identification.
The Identical series is work that researches the concept of individual identity through utilizing and manipulating seemingly undisputable physical “facts,” such as retinal scans, facial characteristics, and ear and fingerprint. By obscuring the physical identity of the subject, the imagery addresses the question of whether or not a single image can capture the “true” identity of a person. Can a person’s identity be determined and trusted, when manipulation of certain physical traits is somewhat easily accomplished?
Profile is an image representative of my work in that I establish myself as a medium, using the physical and psychological tools that I could not access through employing any other subject. It is through using the equipment provided to me on a daily basis that I continue my investigation of the individual’s ephemeral and inconsequential place in society and history.
