Educational Interactives for the McLellan House
The computer exhibitions in the McLellan House focus on the following themes:
- What it took to build the House
- What it took to restore the House
- The evolution of the thriving art scene in Portland
- Life in the House in the 19th century
The computer exhibitions feature digital images of objects that visitors couldn’t view on their own (ie, newspaper advertisements, letters and maps from the Maine Historical Society, the window weights that are not visible to the eye, etc.)
1st Floor Study Center: Re-Building
DVD Kiosk:
10 three-minute videos focusing on the details of the restoration project including: paint analysis, restoration of the flying staircase, faux finish painting, and more.
2 Interactive Computer Kiosks:
- Build It shows visitors an empty parlor that they can decorate. They are “given” 1800 money and told to chose seven elements (rugs, wallpaper, mantles, chair rails, cornices, and wainscoting). Once their room is completed, visitors can compare their parlor with the McLellan House parlor.
- Behind These Walls provides a virtual tour of the McLellan House first floor. Historic photos, video clips of the restoration, and historic documents pop up when visitors cross hotspots on the screen.
2nd floor Study Center: The Family Room
2 Interactive Computer Kiosks:
- Mapping Portland allows visitors to learn about the growth of Portland from a small town with artisans and cabinetmakers to an arts community. There are three maps of different time periods in Portland history for visitors to explore: 1800, 1837, and 1876.
- A Look Inside gives visitors a glimpse into the social and domestic history of the House: who lived in the House, what they would have eaten, and the connection between the objects on display in the L. D. M. Sweat Memorial Galleries and how these objects could have been used in the House.

Museum Information
The Portland Museum of Art is located at Seven Congress Square in downtown Portland. The Museum is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday, and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday. Memorial Day through Columbus Day, the Museum is open on Mondays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Museum admission is $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and students with I.D., $4 for youth ages 6 to 17, and children under 6 are free.
