About our collaborators:
The Telling Room is a nonprofit writing center in Portland, Maine, dedicated to the idea that children and young adults are natural storytellers. Focused on young writers ages 6 to 18, we offer fun and innovative programs that range from free after school writing workshops to in-school residencies throughout the state of Maine. With the support and expertise of local writers, artists, and teachers we seek to build confidence, strengthen literacy skills, and provide real audiences for our students. We believe that the power of creative expression can change our communities and prepare our youth for future success.
Janan Alexandra was born in Nicosia, Cyprus to a Lebanese mother and American father. She holds a BA in Afro-American Studies and Poetry from Smith College, was a 2013 poet-in-residence at the Bucknell Seminar for Younger Poets, and has been published in Rusted Radishes, a literary journal coming out of Beirut, Lebanon. Janan has taught and mentored young folks in Washington D.C., California, and now Maine, where she currently facilitates creative writing workshops with teens at the Telling Room. She believes unhesitatingly that poems live in all of us and is devoted to sharing this indelible truth as widely as possible!
